Point of Apoapsis - Prahlad Bubbar Gallery - London

“If we understand the development of cities as sites of an ever-dynamic urban environment, then the buildings and people therein are its physical and cultural manifestation.”

In the orbit of an object, apoapsis is the point furthest from the body being orbited – it defines how far the object can reach without breaking away from its central body. It therefore invokes at once distance and proximity, or the point of most difference in a cyclical movement.

The interventions that Michiko Isobe and Shubha Taparia propose here respond to the city as a central body around which the artists have chosen to revolve. Their works attempt to create points of distance that are reached by tracing flights of imagination, which depart from city life. While never breaking away from the urban environment, both artists use allusions to fantasy as tools for highlighting the transformative character intrinsic to the city.
